Recent Achievement
Welcome to the forefront of intellectual property education!
In September 2023, the IP Strategy Committee expanded the collaboration under the High-Growth Technology Business Initiative.
This extension brought an exciting addition to the CEIPI educational repertoire: synchronous teaching workshops designed to empower students with the knowledge and skills in intellectual property.
In the workshops expert lecturers and mentors from I3PM helped students to better understand the key concepts of IP management and support them in solving IP management case studies. The first event was organized in September 2023 about the topic of IP strategy
Speakers as well as tutors are all associated with I3PM International Institute for Intellectual Property Management.
Dr. Dominique Christ, IP practicioner and Chair of the Committee IP Strategy at I3Pm as well as Benjamin Del Sol, European Patent Attorney and Chair of the IP Strategy Committee have been assigned as lecturer.
Content of the workshop
In a high-growth technology business, effective communication between the general management, the R&D department and the legal division is crucial for the successful valorization of created IP. This course was designed to equip individuals involved in business decision-making and IP management with the skills and knowledge necessary to enhance their competencies in creating, advancing and implementing an IP strategy.
Participants learned about different IP strategies and how to apply them to maximise the value of IP assets. The course focused on value-based strategies for IP creation and extraction that were integrated into the company’s innovation strategy. Through case studies, participants learned about the five generic IP strategies that have been used in different industries and how to develop a comprehensive 360-degree IP strategy that aligned with their company’s business model.
This initiative was presented through the collaborative efforts of I3PM International Institute for Intellectual Property Management, the European Patent Office, and the IP Business Academy
Intellectual Property
Intellectual property is the achievement of our culture, based on the realization that ideas and inventions are costly and therefore worth protecting, and that we can only progress as a human society if we recognize and protect intellectual achievement. Already in early childhood, we experience how painful it can be when someone “steals our idea”. In the business world, it can become even more painful, as profit margins, sales volumes, or even the very business existence can depend upon effective strategies around intellectual property. The strategic issue arises from planning ahead and consciously using those intellectual property rights that society grants us in return for disclosing our ideas.
Property Rights
After all, it makes a big difference whether I use intellectual property only after an invention has been made, or whether I harness the wealth of information resulting from the disclosure of my competitors’ property rights for my own innovation activities and derive a targeted innovation strategy from it.
It makes a big difference whether I pursue a strategic purpose with my intellectual property rights – for example, to block competitors and thus gain exclusivity, or otherwise to open up an additional source of revenue by licensing as widely as possible – or whether my individual activities do not add up to a coherent whole.
It makes a big difference whether I actively use property rights to defend my competitive position and my idea, or whether I leave them lying around uselessly and, in the worst case, become a passive victim of the legal claims of others.
Strategic Asset
The strategic use of intellectual property rights has not yet reached the center of society and companies today. Most companies neglect the strategic power that lies in intellectual property rights and, at worst, see them as a cost item to be dealt with administratively. The good companies see it as a strategic asset that makes the crucial difference between success and failure, between customer satisfaction and customer churn, between above-average margins and losses, between wonderful products and useless waste.
Key Activities of the Committee
The IP Strategy Committee seeks to have a huge impact on how investors and companies profit from better use of the invisible assets of creativity, innovation and problem solving. With your help, we are improving a powerful 20 Questions framework that empowers the VC, CEO, Board of Directors, entrepreneurs and disadvantaged people worldwide to enhance their competitive advantage, and create new jobs, solutions to real problems and a better world.
We create approaches and methods for an IP-centric strategy development, establish procedures and standards for effective IP management, collaborate with partners to educate and mentor stakeholders, and provide outreach materials for best practices. Our approach ensures that intellectual property is treated as a strategic asset (rather than an annoying costly expense) by all relevant stakeholders of organizations, and that intellectual property is thoughtfully protected and utilized with the goal to drive growth and innovation. For VC’s and CEO’s, the IP Strategy Committee offers valuable insights and guidance to help avoid losses, capture gains, and increase revenue, profits, and value through the smarter use of IP. By leveraging the power of intellectual property, one can unlock new business opportunities and maximize the potential of investments. With this guidance, companies and governments stay ahead of the curve, empowering teams to think creatively and strategically about IP assets and the business potential they can unfold. Passion and commitment to IP strategy is inspiring and essential for organizations aiming to thrive in today’s competitive landscape.
